Deaf People Belong In STEM

For British Science Week 2026, I had the pleasure of being invited back to collaborate with Deaf Identity to create a new phrase celebrating Deaf people in STEM.

Last year, we created the Deaf in STEM phrase to be embroidered on t-shirts and jumpers to showcase Deaf people who work in STEM, and those studying to join us. We had a lot of feedback from people who wanted to wear one, but were either not Deaf, not in STEM, or both. So this year, we created the phrase Deaf People Belong In STEM, which can be worn by ANYONE who wants to show their support.

I was also delighted to get a Hearing ally on board to help model the designs, and provide some empowering words for Deaf people working towards a career in STEM.

“Best of luck to anyone considering a career in science, hope to see you in the lab soon!” – Rob

Being a Deaf person in STEM can be challenging at times, but Deafness is by no means an insurmountable obstacle. In my experience, all it takes is an open-mind, the willingness to ask questions, and the strength to make mistakes. All these traits are vital in the world of science. The only thing that’s ever held me back is stigma, not my hearing loss.
